These are the five most common reasons we encounter for a fan being stuck on one speed.
1. Faulty Capacitor
The capacitor helps the fan motor operate at different speeds. It’s an electrical component that isn’t immune to wear and tear. If it starts to fail, some fan speeds will stop working. You might also notice a humming sound, or your fan will take longer than usual to start up.
2. Faulty Speed Switch
If you’re in an older property, you may have older-style ceiling fans with a pull-chain speed switch. Pulling the chain cycles through the available speeds.
These switches can wear out over time, as do the wall-mounted fan controllers. Definitely worth checking out the switch or controller if your fan has stopped changing speeds.
3. Problem with the Remote or Receiver
If your fan is controlled by a remote, there are a couple of things that could be going wrong. This one sounds glaringly obvious, but trust us, it happens more than you think – check the batteries in the remote. Flat batteries mean your remote isn’t sending its signal through so your fan won’t be changing speeds.
There could also be a problem with the remote receiver inside the fan which can prevent the fan from responding properly to speed commands.
4. Incompatible Wall Controller
If a wall controller has recently been installed or replaced, it may not be compatible with the ceiling fan.
