The switchboard at your property can be a restricting factor for Brisbane homeowners. You want to get solar – the installer says you need to upgrade your board first. You want an EV charger – same scenario. Swimming pool? Ducted air conditioning? You’ll need more circuits on your board.

The switchboard decides what your home electrical system can and can’t do. Often, that leaves you wondering if it’s time for an upgrade. This guide is for homeowners making that decision.

What Does a Switchboard Upgrade Involve?

If a licensed electrician has assessed your switchboard and determined an upgrade is required, here’s what will happen on the day the work takes place:

  • Electrical supply to the property will be isolated in coordination with Energex. This means you will lose power at your home for a few hours. You can budget for most of a working day without power – the exact time length will depend on a few variables such as whether a relocation is taking place.
  • The old board will be removed and a new compliant enclosure added. Every circuit is rewired with the circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs) as required under AS/NZS 3000:2018.
  • Every circuit gets tested before the board is energised.
  • The job closes out with a Certificate of Electrical Safety lodged with the Queensland Electrical Safety Office.

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Brisbane?

A domestic switchboard upgrade in Brisbane typically runs $1,800 to $6,000+ inc. GST. It’s a wide range because there are a number of variables: circuit count, the condition of the existing board, whether the mains needs upgrading, meter position and access.

If you’re in a smaller home with straightforward access, you’ll be at the lower end of the scale. Larger homes with asbestos backing, jobs with wiring problems or homes needing an upgrade to three-phase power will require a more expensive upgrade.

If you’re getting quotes on a switchboard upgrade, ask the electrician these questions:

  • Is a Certificate of Electrical Safety included?
  • Does it cover RCDs on every circuit, not just power points?
  • Is there a fixed price on paper, or is it subject to “further investigation”?

What Will a Switchboard Upgrade Unlock?

This is the part most guides don’t get to.

Solar

A modest solar system on a reasonably modern board can often be added without a full switchboard replacement. There needs to be a spare slot for the inverter circuit and existing RCD coverage must be compliant.

Larger systems, battery storage, or solar going onto an older board may require an upgrade. More Brisbane homes are getting solar systems with batteries thanks to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which has prompted many concurrent switchboard upgrades.

EV charger

A home EV charger needs a dedicated 32-amp circuit with its own circuit breaker. Most Brisbane boards from before 2010 don’t have the capacity or the RCD architecture to take that without modification. If you’ve bought an EV and are planning a home charger, budget for the board at the same time.

Extra Circuits Required

Renovations, a new air conditioning system, a home office, or a workshop: all of these mean new circuits. Under current Queensland regulations, adding a new circuit to a non-compliant board triggers a compliance upgrade on the whole installation. That’s how many Brisbane homeowners end up booking a full switchboard replacement when they originally just wanted one new power point.

Swimming Pool

A pool brings a significant electrical load with it: the pump, the filter, heating if you’re running it, lighting, and any automation equipment. Each of these needs its own circuit with RCD protection, installed by a pool electrician. Older boards often lack the spare capacity or a compliant architecture to support a pool installation. If you’re building or upgrading a pool, get the board assessed early in the process rather than at the point of installation.

Safety

Modern boards cut power within 30 milliseconds of detecting an earth fault. A ceramic fuse on an old switchboard can take much longer. If your board still has porcelain fuses, you may want to upgrade to protect your property and everyone in it.

When Should I Upgrade My Switchboard?

If the following situations apply to you, then it’s time to seriously consider an upgrade to your switchboard

  • You have ceramic fuses or no safety switches. This is overdue regardless of anything else you’re planning.
  • You’re adding solar, an EV charger, or ducted air conditioning. Get the board inspected before the installer arrives.
  • You’re renovating. Any new circuit work in a non-compliant installation triggers the upgrade anyway. Better to scope it upfront.
  • You’re selling in the next few years. Conveyancers and building inspectors increasingly ask about certified electrical work. An old board with no paper trail can affect a sale.
  • You’re not planning any of the above. If the board is over 25 years old, has never had RCDs added, and you’ve never had it inspected, book in a switchboard assessment.
