Adding a battery to your solar system isn’t just a nice extra, it’s a smart investment that saves you plenty on your power bills over time. Here are a few of the benefits:
Lower power bills: Use more of the energy you produce and so you buy less from the grid. Your battery means you can enjoy solar power at peak evening periods of usage.
Backup power: Keep the lights on when the grid goes down. Rural Queenslanders love their solar batteries for this reason. Being less reliant on the grid means energy independence.
More energy independence: Control your own power, with less worry about rising electricity costs.
Better value for your solar: Feed-in tariffs are dropping. Storing your own energy means you save more than you’d earn selling it back. Self-use of your solar energy is generally worth twice as much as feed-in tariffs, so this is a smart way to save on your power bills over time.
Pay off your solar setup faster: Smart use of your solar system and batteries means you can decrease its payback period.
Your solar panels soak up the sun and convert it into electricity. During the day, you often generate more power than you use. Without a battery, that excess energy just gets sent back to the grid.
A solar battery stores that surplus energy instead. When the sun goes down or the grid switches off, your battery kicks in and powers your home or business. You’re enjoying the energy created by your solar panels even when it’s dark outside.
The energy stored in the solar batteries will basically be used when the household energy requirements are more than the solar panels can supply. This can be particularly useful in peak energy times such as the early evening, when there is extra demand on the grid so tariffs are higher. You can use your stored energy, then revert to grid power when its off-peak.
The good news is that batteries are becoming more affordable! The federal government has recognised the importance of batteries when it comes to lowering household energy bills and improving sustainability. On July 1st, 2025, they’re rolling out the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, designed to put the cost of solar batteries within reach of more Aussie families.
The program is available to anyone who already has a rooftop solar installed and wants to add a battery, or anybody installing solar and a battery at the same time. It’s also open to small businesses or community facilities.
The rebate works out to around 30% off your total battery install price, which should equate to a maximum of about $372 per usable kWh. For the average 11.5kWh system, that’s a saving of roughly $4,000.
The solar battery needs to be installed by an approved installer like Voltora Industries, and there are a few other criteria that need to be met. Find out exactly what they are all about the Cheaper Home Batteries Program here.
