A solar power system at your home or business premises helps make energy bills significantly more manageable while being kinder on the environment too. There’s even more incentive to go solar now, with the Cheaper Home Batteries Program being rolled out on July 1st, 2025.
This is a $2.3 billion initiative aimed at helping more Aussies get access to affordable, high-quality home battery systems. We’re excited about what this means for our customers – it’s a way to get more out of your solar setup, with big savings to be had on small-scale battery installations for homes and businesses.
Let’s take a closer look at the Cheaper Home Batteries Program and how it can benefit you.
What’s the Program About?
The government is offering upfront discounts on the cost of approved home battery systems. The rebate works out to around 30% off your total battery install price, which theoretically should equate to a maximum of about $372 per usable kWh. For the average 11.5kWh system, that’s a saving of roughly $4,000.
You don’t have to apply for anything yourself. If you go through an approved solar installer, like Voltora Industries, the rebate is automatically applied to reflect on the final installation costs.
Who Can Access The Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
This program is open to a wide range of households and small businesses. You might qualify if:
- You already have rooftop solar installed and want to add a battery.
- You’re installing solar and a battery at the same time.
- You run a small business or community facility.
There are some battery system requirements, too:
- The battery you choose must have a usable capacity of between 5kWh and 50kWh.
- It needs to be brand new, and connected to a new or existing solar system.
- It needs to be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable. You don’t have to sign up to a VPP, but your system needs to be ready for it.
- The battery and inverter need to be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list.
- The battery system can be off-grid or on-grid.
An important note is that electric vehicle charging systems and batteries aren’t eligible under this scheme.
How Much Could You Save?
According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, households with existing rooftop solar could cut their power bills by up to $1,100 each year. If you’re installing both a new solar system and a battery, that figure jumps to around $2,300 annually. This could knock off as much as 90% of a typical family’s electricity costs – massive savings in difficult times!
Key Dates to Know
The official start date is July 1, 2025. However, batteries installed from April 6th may also be eligible, as long as they’re not turned on before July 1.
If you’d like our advice, getting in early with your battery install is a wise idea, as there could be a bit of a rush on when July 1 hits. You can always install now and then wait until July 1st to turn on the system.
The Importance of Batteries
Australia leads the world in rooftop solar adoption. But while one in three households (around 4 million) has solar panels, only one in forty has battery storage. Batteries have proven to be cost-prohibitive, an expensive entry point beyond the means of the average Australian.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program aims to change that.
Batteries help:
- Reduce your dependence on the grid
- Store excess solar energy for nighttime use
- Cut carbon emissions
- Stabilise the energy network
- Support Australia’s 2030 target of 82% renewable energy.
Batteries are good for your wallet, and even better for the environment!
Things to Watch
A few tips before you jump in:
- Check your battery is eligible. It needs to be within the right size range and VPP-ready.
- Use an approved installer. Only accredited installers can offer the rebate.
- Check for additional state incentives. Some states—like WA—have extra rebates or zero-interest loans. You might be able to stack these with the federal discount.
